City of Refuge, National Park Pu’uhonua O Honaunau
To get to this national park it will take about one hour to get to the park. It in Honaunau village in the Big island.
I really love this place. I really bring me back to how the old Hawaiian people lived. This time that I went I was guided by a national park ranger. We got to see many things at the park. I also got to hear many of his stories.
He introduced this plant the Naupaka plant. It has a special Hawaiian story of lovers that were separated because of there status. But before they were split they broke in half this flower. One flower is near the ocean and the other flower grows up in the mountain. You can see in this picture that this flower is in half.
We were also introduced to Konane, a Hawaiian game. For Japanese it is kind of like the game囲碁. It is played with black lava rocks and white coral stones.
The main attraction at the National Park is the constructed Hawaiian Temple. There you may see Tiki statues to represent Hawaiian gods.
Another thing they also have is a canoe house, were there is a canoe that they built and every year they have a large festival every June were they can ride it out in the bay.
If coming to Hawaii I really recommend this place to feel old Hawaii and see how they lived.
