In all of Seattle, no tour provides more insight into the city's history than the Underground Tour located in Seattle's Pioneer Square. The Underground Tour marks the perfect starting point for anyone looking to better understand Seattle's history and culture. Since Seattle has yet to reach the 200-year mark in its history, the explanation of Seattle's founding fathers does not run long. Above everything else, the Underground Tour paints a non-glorified and often humorous picture of Seattle history as the tour's founder Bill Speidel intended.

Bill Speidel was a Seattle historian who wanted to preserve the legacy of the city, first and foremost being the protection of the Pioneer Square District from urban renewal plans that would destroy the old architecture and erect in its place parking garages and condominiums. As a result of Speidel's efforts, Pioneer Square was listed as a National Historic District in 1970. No doubt that the Underground Tour, which Speidel started in 1965, played an important part in the district's preservation.

The main draw of the tour lies beneath the current streets of Pioneer Square. Following the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, the city was rebuilt above the previous ground at sea level in order to create a better sewer system. Before the ground level was raised, however, many buildings were rebuilt at the original ground level. New city streets were built on top of 15 foot walls that surrounded the buildings on each block. When these blocks were covered up, several areas below street level remained as they were and forgotten for many years, until Speidel decided to open them up again in 1965.

The tour starts in a large room where the guide explains Seattle history. When I went there was a large group of people on the tour, and the guide asked where people from. There was one tourist from England and a couple from Hong Kong. There were people from around the United States, such as New York, and local people as well. When the tour guide asked where I was from, I told him I was originally from Tacoma. From that point he launched into several jokes at Tacoma's expense- the tour often makes fun of Tacoma because of its historic rivalry with Seattle. I kept my Tacoma pride from exploding out as the tour went on and realized that because the Underground Tour is truly a Seattle tour, this type of joking should be expected and makes the tour feel authentically local.

In the three underground locations the tour guide continues to explain the Seattle history in several stages. Stories about building the new Seattle after the great fire, the prosperous effects of the Klondike Gold Rush, and the taxation of prostitutes who operated under the guise of "seamstresses" are all told in the context of the underground tour.

The tour guide explains the underground of the building we are in. If you look closely at the picture of the building he is pointing to, the first floor of the building is at the current level of the underground. When the city street levels were raised, they had to make a new entryway on the second floor of the building in the picture, which is the street level of Seattle today.
ツアーガイドが今入っているアンダーグラウンドのビルを説明しています。ガイドさんが指しているビルが表してる画像をよく見ると、ビルの一階は今のアンダーグラウンドのレベルでした。シアトルの海抜のレベルが全部上がってから、そのビルの二階が一階になって、また新しい入り口を作らないといけませんでした。
An actual toilet from the time the underground was built remains. The stories about the old sewer system before the city level was raised above the sea level are a big part of the tour. Once you hear the hilarious stories you will understand why it was so crucial to raise the ground level of the city to make a better sewer system.
アンダーグラウンドが作られた当時のトイレです。シアトルの大火災の前に海抜が海と同じレベルにあった下水の排水システムの話はアンダーグラウンドツアーの話の中で大きいです。シアトルの下水、トイレなどについて話は爆笑がでてくるぐらい面白くて、なぜか新しい街を海抜にもっと高く、排水がうまく流せるように作られたのかわかりやすくなります。
Coming up from one of the underground areas is an alleyway in Pioneer Square, which sometimes is used for shot locations in movies because of its old look. I am not sure what this TV crew was doing at the time...

Telephone booth that had been thrown away in the underground. After people stopped using the underground when the new Seattle had been completed, people would throw their garbage down in the underground areas. When Bill Speidel opened the tour, much of that garbage had to be cleared to make a path through the underground areas.
