The United Nations Headquarters, located along the East River on 1^st avenue between 42^nd and 48^th streets, is technically not under US government jurisdiction. The building sits on soil belonging to all 193 member states. Because of this, bring your passport when you are visiting so you can get a special stamp upon entering and “leaving” US land!

国際連合本部ビルは、マンハッタンのイーストリバー沿いにある１アベニューの、４２丁目から４８丁目の間にあります。このビルは国連の管轄で、アメリカ政府の管轄ではありません。だから国連ビルを訪れる時は、外国へ出る時と同じようにパスポートが必要になります。ここでは、“アメリカ合衆国から出国した”という意味の特別なスタンプを押してもらえます！

The UN offers a one-hour guided tour during which visitors can learn about the organization, what it does, and what kind of work happens within the New York building as well as around the world. The tour allows guests to sit inside and tour the General Assembly. The guides speak a variety of different languages – including Japanese!

国連では訪れる人たちに、もっとよくニューヨークの国連が世界の中で、どんな仕事をしているかを知ってもらうために、１時間のツアーを催行しています。ツアーでは、国連総会が開かれる会場に実際座ることもできます。このツアーには、色々な言語のガイドがいます。もちろん、日本語ガイドもいます！

Be sure to register for the tour beforehand, and show up one-hour in advance. It costs $18 for adults to enter.

ツアーへ参加するには、集合時間の１時間前に着いて、名前を登録してください。大人のチケット代は１８ドルです。

An unmistakable globe sculpture greets guests just past the UN Headquarter security. It is a bronze ball with a huge crack and another bronze ball inside. Its designer, Arnaldo Pomodoro, has also designed other spherical sculptures for other locations around the world. These sister spheres are on display at places such as the Vatican Museums, Trinity College, the Hirshorn Museum in Washington DC, and Pesaro in Italy. Though there seems to be no set meaning to this UN sculpture, it seems to be representing an old globe growing old and cracking open through change, and a new world emerging under the surface.

とてもよく目立つ大きな球形の彫刻が、国連のセキュリティーを通ったところにあります。ボールに裂け目があり、その間から小さなボールが見えます。この彫刻を作ったデザイナーのアルナルド・ポモドロは、同じシリーズの彫刻類がバチカン美術館、トリニティ・カレッジ、ワシントンDCにあるハーシュホーン博物館や、イタリアのぺサロにあります。この彫刻には決められてた意味はないのですが、古い地球が壊れて生まれ変わり、新しい世界が浮かび上がってくるように見えます。

Visiting the UN is a great tourist activity – since the tours are all scheduled at set times and there are only 24 tour guides, the complex is never too crowded, and stepping inside the air conditioned building is a nice way to take an educational break from the summer heat.   

国連ビルを訪れることは観光客にはとてもよいアクティビティーです。スケジュールは既に決められていて、２４人のガイドがいます。そのためあまり混雑することもなく、いったんビルに入れば空調が効いているので、夏の暑さから離れられ、その上有意義な時間が過ごせます。

The building is decorated with a lineup of flags outside, and a new one is added each time the UN gains a member state. Currently, there are 193 flags lined up outside, arranged in alphabetical order.

ビルの外には、たくさんの国旗が立てられています。国連に入った国の国旗が新しく上げられます。現在は193各国の国旗がアルファベット順に並んでいます。

Since visiting the UN only takes a couple hours, it is a good idea to check out some nearby attractions as well!
