Madison Square sits between Broadway and Madison Avenues, between 23^rd and 26^th Streets. Named after the fourth president of the United States of America – James Madison, this square is the perfect combination of relaxing and bustling. The area became a heavy shopping district in 1847, which is when the square officially became a public park. Now the square is a popular tourist site because of the famed Flatiron Building landmark that stretches out from the south tip.

マディソンスクエアはブロードウェイとマディソンアベニューの間の、２３丁目と２６丁目の間にあります。ここは４代目のアメリカ大統領（ジェームス・マディソン）にちなんで名づけられています。ここは歴史もあり、注目が集まる場所です。有名なフラットアイアンビルがあることもあり、とても人気がある地区です。

The park actually has a tree that was once a part of James Madison’s estate!

Madison Square Garden was originally built here! There have been four editions of Madison Square Garden throughout history. First, it was the home to P.T. Barnum’s circus. After that, it was home to Stanford White’s seduction lair. The third and fourth editions of the complex were built at the current Madison Square Garden location – at 39^th Street and 8^th Avenue.

有名なマディソンスクエアガーデンは今、39丁目と８アベニューにあるんですが、その前にマディソンパークのところにありました。マディソンスクエアガーデンは有名なスタジアムなのです。このスタジアムが最初に建てられた時にはP.T.バーナムと言う人のサーカステントでした。その後、スタンフォード・ウァイトと言う人の屋敷になりました。その後二回スタジアムたてましたが、両方ともは39丁目と８アベニューに引っ越しました。

Though Rockefeller Center is now famed for its grand Christmas tree, the first lit-up Christmas tree in New York City was right here in Madison Square Park! This Star of Hope monument now stands commemorating that event.

ニューヨークでも一番有名なクリスマスツリーはロックフェラーセンターにありますが、最初にクリスマスツリーを建てた場所はマディソンパークです。

Before Madison Square was a park, it was the location of a grand archway – similar to the one at Washington Square Park or to the larger and more famed Arc de Triomphe in Paris!

マディソンパークは公園になった前、大きな凱旋門がここに立っていました。この凱旋門はワシントン・スクエア・パークかパリのエトワール凱旋門に似ていました。

 The Statue of Liberty’s arm and torch were once displayed in Madison Square! The structure’s designer put the first parts of the now renowned monument on display in order to prove it would be a popular attraction. This was one of the ways in which he raised funds for the building of the rest of the statue!

とても有名な自由の女神像の松明はずっと前にマディソンスクエアで展示されていました。自由の女神像のデサイナーは自由の女神を建設する資金を得るためにお金をつくらなければいけませんでした。そこで有名な建造物になることを証拠立てるために自由の女神像をマディソンスクエアパークに展示しました。

There is an obelisk that stands to the north of the park – this structure doubles as both a memorial and a mausoleum – General William Jenkins’ tomb is right underneath it!

公園の北側にはオベリスクが建てられています。これは、ジェネラル・ウィリアム・ジェンキンスのアイデアによるものです。

Now, Madison Square Park is a great place to grab a Shake Shack burger and eat in the grass, take kids to play in the park, or stroll around amongst the many Madison Park hydrangea flowers.

今、マディソンスクエアパークは、シェイク・シャックバーガー店からハンバーガーを買って芝生の上で食べたり、子供を連れて公園で遊んだり、ハイドランジアの花に囲まれて散歩ができる場所です。
