If you’re a movie lover I urge you to check out The Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City. It was built in 1929 as a super luxurious “Wonder Theatre” to suit film and live performances. Iit was open until August 1986. The last film showed Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (awesome). The theatre had been sold and set for demolition until Jersey City bought the theatre. The theatre is currently maintained and under a restoration period by “Friends of the Loew’s”, a group of volunteers and is considered a historic landmark.

I attended the last viewing of the early 2012 season before it closed for the summer for more renovating. For $7 you can watch a double feature! They were playing the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and the first Harry Potter movie. They sell popcorn, candy and soda. The same people you buy your ticket or snacks from are the same people who are helping restore this building so everyone one here is super warm and friendly providing an excellent atmosphere.

This organ player was playing the Willy Wonka soundtrack. The entire theatre itself acts as the organ’s amplifier. You can watch the huge pipes that run all the way up to the ceiling open and close as it is being played. You can literally hear it breathing.
You won’t find any new movies playing here only charming classics. It might not be what you’re into but the atmosphere and experience of the place will get you hooked.
This theatre is a very special and inspiring place I highly recommend visiting it. It’s located directly across the street from Jersey City’s Journal Square PATH station. Also visit the site http://loewsjersey.org/ check out their schedule. Even sign up to volunteer if you want!
