The Lowline started as an idea to take an unused Trolley Terminal under Delancey Street in the Lower East Side and turn it into a park. The park would be about 3 city street blocks long.

The Trolley Terminal served as a looping station for Streetcars to go in and out of Brooklyn crossing the Williamsburg Bridge. Service was shut down in 1948 and for six decades this huge space has been unused.

What makes The Lowline unique is the development of "Remote Skylight" technology. Remote Skylights will feed sunlight from above ground and shine it below.

The purpose of the park is to provide an area for greenery to be grown indoors. It would be the underground equivalent of The High Line .

Actual development of The Lowline is still in proposal stages.
