As you can see from this map, the public transit system in New York City can be slightly daunting. There are a seemingly endless amount of lines that travel to a seemingly endless amount of destinations, and it looks VERY possible to lose your way within the confines of the underground concrete tunnel jungle.

My first piece of advice is to download the Embark NYC app on your mobile phone if you have one. This free app is a great way to figure out what line to take and which station to get off at.

Secondly, use Google maps to plan your trip! Google provides a comprehensive transit schedule of the trains running at each station. It is usually also up to date with delays, so it will make your travel much more time-effective.

Finally, avoid the subway before noon on the weekends, if possible. This is the busiest time of the subway because the trains (regardless of what the schedule says) only come once every 30 minutes. If you need to travel at this time either leave 30 minutes ahead of time or download the Uber taxi app to avoid the subway entirely!

Now, for actually navigating the subway:

1) There are two directions within Manhattan: Uptown/Bronx, and Downtown/Brooklyn. This makes this pretty straightforward, as all you need to do is figure out whether you are travelling uptown or downtown.
マンハッタンからは主に２か所のへ行く路線があります。アップタウン/ブロンクス経由とダウンタウン/ブルックリン経由とがあります。これはアップタウンかダウンタウン、どちらへ行くかが決まれば、けっこう分かりやすいです。
2) ENTER the subway at the correct entrance – the entrance will say Uptown or Downtown. If it is not the right one, cross the street East-West-wise. This entrance will be the right one.
地下鉄に乗る時は、正しい方向の入口から入って下さい。入口にはアップタウン行きかダウンタウン行きかが記されています。正しい入口でなければ、その向かい側の入口へ行けば、そこが正しいです。
3) Purchase a metro card at one of the vending machines. The metro cards have a variety of options, and a one-way trip will cost you approximately $2.50. Plan the number of times you’ll have to ride the subway and then add value to your card! You’ll have to provide a zip code in order to purchase a card, so if you aren’t from the USA, be sure to have one prepared. An easy one is 10001.

4) Check your Embark NYC app to see what specific trains stop at the station you need to land on! For example, the green line hosts the 4, 5, and 6 trains. The 4 & 5 are express, so they don’t stop at every station. Usually the express trains will be on one side of the track, and the regular trains will be on another side. If they all arrive on the same track, the trains have an orange light-up number written on every cart! Check to make sure you’re getting on the right train.

5) Exiting the subway can be somewhat of a nightmare since the turnstiles work as entering/exiting in both directions and the people trying to get on the subway will occupy all of these turnstiles. Just try to navigate your way through or follow the other people who are exiting the station!
地下鉄の駅から出るのは時々悪夢に思えます。改札は入口、出口両側から利用できるので人どうしが鉢合わせるのです。ほかの駅から出て行く人の後ろに歩くともうちょっと早く出れると思います！
