Today, I'd like to introduce a new gastropub that opened on the 1st floor of the Hilton Double Tree Hotel in Little Tokyo. First, for those who may be unfamiliar - what exactly is a gastropub? "Gastropub" comes from a combination of two words, which are "gastronomique" (meaning food or gourmet cuisine in French) and "pub". Generally speaking, in the U.S., gastropubs are bars or restaurants that serve high quality food and drinks.

The opening of Justice Urban Tavern adds to the vitality of the Little Tokyo area, which has been developing quickly with the construction of new apartments and restaurants. Upon opening the doors to the gastropub - voilà! I was greeted by the smile of friendly waiters in a beautiful open space. Justice Urban Tavern is full of urban vibe and the decorations are modern and simple.

There are front-facing windows that allow patrons to enjoy the view of City Hall, while sipping on a variety of local beers.

I decided to try a Golden Road IPA, a local beer brewed in Glendale. The beer had a light summery touch of grapefruit, grass, and biscuit.

For appetizers, we decided to begin with steamed black mussels. The aroma of saffron, garlic, and onion wandered in the air as the waiter brought the dish to our table. Overall, the portions and flavor were both satisfying.

Now, onto the most exciting part - entrées! The grilled hanger steak was juicy and tender. It was an American take on the staple French bistro item: steak-frites.

But for me, I enjoyed the smoked pork ribs more because the rub was very tasty. The ribs are served with a side of Cole slaw and deviled eggs.



Happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily, so it's a perfect spot to grab a drink after work, or if you're visiting LA, it's a great place to have your first gastropub experience!
