Mammoth Mountain is a less known but world class California resort for skiing and snowboarding. Mammoth is located 300 miles (500km) from Los Angeles. The drive takes about 5 hours.
The snow this year is amazing and it still keeps coming with additional snow falling every day this week. This season the resort has already received 374 inches (950cm) of snow – that is the size of a three story building!
I went there recently with my son. There are a variety of lift passes you can buy. They have two, three, four, five, and six day passes that can be a great savings. I bought a two day pass. You can use the two day pass to ski two days within a four day period. The “adult two day pass” (ages 23-64) cost $176 ($88 per day). A “youth two day pass” (ages 13-22) cost $138 ($69 per day). A “child two day pass” (ages 5-12) cost $80 ($40 per day). These are a great value and the cheapest I could find anywhere. If you buy at the mountain a one day adult pass is almost $120.
The conditions are perfect this year. All levels of ability can be accommodated from beginner to top level expert skiers. Fresh powder abounds.
While waiting in line for a gondola to the top of the mountain, my son recognized a skier behind us. It was Maddie Bowman, the GOLD MEDALIST for the USA women’s Ski Halfpipe at 2014 Sochi Olympics. My son had a short conversation with her. She was there for competition that was postponed due to windy conditions. She was SO nice!
Most people think of California and they think about beaches and surfing. Next time try Mammoth Mountain it is AMAZING!
