Southern California is home to a wide diverse bird population. The populations will vary according to location. The mountains and the sea all have easy to identify birds of many varieties.
Recently in my backyard garden, I found a nest with three tiny hummingbird eggs – only two would eventually hatch. I would check the nest occassionally but not enough to disturb the nesting mother. I took pictures over a five week period.
When the babies hatched, their eyes were closed. They had no feathers and weighed only three quarters of a gram each. The mother took care to nest with them for the first eight to 12 days to keep them warm. At about two weeks, the mother left the babies alone as they have developed enough to stay warm in the nest. The chicks were fed regurgitated insects usually one to three times an hour. After three weeks the chicks left the nest.
It was an amazing experience to see the birds grow up!
Maybe if you are lucky enough you might find a nest too if you come to California.
