Los Angeles gets a lot of interesting pop-up museums and shops, which are temporary displays or stores that may move around the country/world. Some that we've had are Saved by the Max, Candytopia, The Museum of Ice Cream, and recently, the Disgusting Food Museum.
Don't be fooled by the name of the name! The Disgusting Food Museum may have some of your favorite foods.
What's delicious for one culture may be disgusting for another. With delicacies and culturally significant foods from around the world, the museum tries to challenge visitors to think about their own opinions on what makes food disgusting for them.
You start out your experience with the above display. It's very important to read before experiencing the museum. It talks about the categories of disgust. For me, I kept thinking about this as looked at food that I thought was disgusting. I brought a friend from Singapore because she likes some foods I think are gross, but I like some foods she thinks are gross too. We had some good conversations because of this museum.
One thing that was a little difficult for me was the smells. Many of the foods on display are real, and you can even eat some things, like toasted crickets, salt licorice, and sauerkraut juice. But most of the "disgusting" western foods were cheeses, and there were many jars that let you smell the cheeses. Of course, some food is "gross" because it's not something we think of as food, or it seems immoral to us.
Unfortunately, by the time you read this, the museum will no longer be in Los Angeles. If you're in Sweden, you can visit it, for now. That's what's good and bad about pop-up museums: you can see something very unique, but you must hurry to see it before it's gone!
