Southern California is very good for conventions, especially Los Angeles. Every year around 4th of July weekend, a local convention center holds Anime Expo for 4 days. This has happened every year since 1992. It is the largest North American anime convention. Not only do anime and manga fans attend, but people in industries such as anime voice actors and directors, manga artists, J-Pop and visual kei artists, and more.
People come from all over the United States. Of course, because anime and manga are made in Japan, some people from Japan fly over for the event too. There are amateur artists, professional cosplayers, researchers, and more.
You can watch a preview of new anime, go to a butler cafe, attend a cosplay gathering, buy official anime merchandise or original fanart, and more.
One nice thing about Anime Expo is that it is run by anime fans. Even regular people like you and I can volunteer to help. Volunteers take ticket stubs, monitor lines, assist special guests, organize events, and much much more.
If you like Japanese otaku pop-culture, Anime Expo is a must see. Just be careful not to be late. It's unofficial name is "Line-con." This is because there are long lines for many things if you don't plan ahead.
