The Channel Islands - Santa Cruz Island

Hello Everyone!

A little while back, I went to somewhere called the Channel Islands off the coast of California. Just needing a change of pace from the bustling cities and same old views, my friends and I took a little side trip.

サンタ・クルーズアイランドに行きました。サンタ・クルーズアイランドはチャネルアイランドの一つの島です。ちょっと、にぎやかな場所から離れたくって行きました。

The Channel Islands are a series of islands off the coast of Ventura in California. We ended up going to the largest of the islands, Santa Cruz. We left early in the morning to catch the ferry ride that would take us there. We left our homes in Torrance at around 5:45AM in the morning. The port area is about an hour and a half away, so we needed to leave early. The boat ride was choppy, so be forewarned if you get seasick easily. Many people were sleeping on the boat ride and some people did look pretty sick. I however, had the time of my life! The boat ride was by far my favorite part. I got to see dolphins and two species of whales, the finn whale and the grey whale.

*If you do decide to take a trip to the Channel Islands while in Los Angeles, keep in mind that you need to purchase your ferry tickets in advance. Tickets are rougly about $60 round trip for adults, and the boat ride lasts about 2 hours. The prices can change depending on dates and which island you're going to.

朝、早く起きて、ベンチュラの近くにある港まで行きました。行くときはボートに乗っていかなければいけません。凄くゆれて、私にとってはとても楽しいボートライドでした。イルカとかクジラもみれられて、すばらしい光景でした。

＊ボートライドのチケットは前もって買うのがオススメです。（値段＄60USDぐらいです。）

Once we arrived, we were quickly told some rules by the biologists and environmental specialists. One of the main things to remember if you are interested in coming is that you cannot leave any trash behind! There are no trash bins, and you must take your trash back with you to main land California. The reason for this is that there are a highly endangered species of fox that are only found on the island. As the island isn't very large and the population is quite low, this could prove to be detrimental. If you are caught feeding the foxes, or if the foxes (even accidentally) get ahold of your food or trash, you can be fined greatly so please take precaution and also respect the animals and the rules if you do go. So please do not feed the foxes, no matter how cute they are. The rules are for the protection of the animals placed upon by people who study and have the well-being of the creatures of the island at heart.

二時間あとについて、船からおりました。生物学者たちは島のいくつかの規則を説明した。ぜたいにごみとかはもってけらなければいけないです。ごみばこは島自体にひとつものないからです。あと、とても大事なのは、ぜたいに狐とか他の動物にはえさとかはあげちゃいけません。もしも食べ物とかを落とした場合も、拾ってもってなければいけません。

狐たちはとてもとてもかわいいですが、食べ物は揚げないように気をつけました～。

On the island there are no restaurants or shops, so you need to bring your own lunch if you are taking a day trip there. If you're interested in staying overnight by camping, you will need to bring your own equipment and food supplies, as well as your own secure storage for your trash and food. While I loved the island and the break from skyscrapers and blaring traffic, I will be honest that there isn't a whole lot to do other than hike and take in the beauty of the surroundings. I think the key is to go with people you enjoy spending time with, and just aprpeciate what's around you if you do go, and judge how long you would like to stay based upon that.

レストランとかお店もないのでお昼は自分で用意してもってきてください～。私はサンドウィッチを持っていきました。ごみが少なくって、かたずけも簡単でオススメです！ハイキングいがい、あんまりやることはないですが、やっぱり景色をながめながら、リラックスするのもいいですよ
