Are you looking for a unique place to visit not far from Rome If so, just take a train and after about 1 hour and 20 minutes
you will go from the Eternal City to the small but nice town of Tarquinia .
Tarquinia is a very ancient town located in the northern Lazio, on a hill with views to the sea.
Thanks to the beautiful ruins of the Etruscan period, in 2004 Tarquinia has become Unesco ‘World Heritage Centre’ .
Do you know who the Etruscans were? They were people of unknown origins who lived in west-central Italy from the 9th century BC. Their culture reached its peak in the 6th century BC. (More or less the same final period of Jōmon-jidai). The most impressive ruins that we can see is the Etruscan Necropolis.
To better understand the history of these ancient and very civilized people, it is indispensable to visit the Necropolis located on a hill outside of the current city of Tarquinia.
If you decide to visit the Etruscan tombs, you will be captured by the big number of tombs cut in rock and topped by impressive tumuli (burial mounds).
Tombs have been sealed since last century, therefore the interior paintings have been kept intact and in a very good condition. The majority of these tombs have beautiful wall paintings in their inside which reveal aspects of life, death and religious beliefs of this people.
If you want to better know how the Etruscans used to live I recommend you to visit the ‘Archeological Etruscan Museum’, located in the centre of the town, where you can see amazing archeological find of their life and death...
...and you can see the famous 'Cavalli Alati'
, part of an ancient Etruscan temple
If you get tired to walk in this relaxing and interesting place , you can go to the centre of the town of Tarquinia to see the
Middle Ages buildings that compose the skyline of the city.
When you enter the town, you can find one of the main squares, Piazza Cavour, where there is the Archeological Etruscan Museum and behind this you will meet the real ancient part of the town: several churches (among them the famous Duomo, San Martino, San Salvatore, San Giacomo)..
...towers (such as Torre Barucci in piazza S. Stefano), Medio Ages walls..(^∇^)
Walking in the centre, just look for the ‘Belvedere Della Ripa’ in Via della Ripa and you will be captured by the amazing landscape on the valley.
Near this small garden you can see the ‘Matilde di Canossa Tower’, one of the most beautiful part of the town: enter in the tower and go to the top, you will see the beautiful view of the town and, if you go in late afternoon, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset on the sea .
Go back downstairs , and walking through the Middle Ages gate, you will find the Santa Maria in Castello church and the highest tower of the town
.
There is a legend about this part of Tarquinia that says that the countess Matilde di Canossa wanted to build here her castle in XI century. The castle has been destroyed and later a church has been built in the close area. Nobody knows if the castle was there, but the towers and the gates made the people think that before there was a big palace there
