Hello Everyone!Today I will bring You with me to visit The Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Wall.
Are you ready? 3...2...1...Let's go!
This beautiful Basilica is located in the quarter Ostiense and can be easily reached taking underground's line B.
The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of four ancient major basilicas in Rome.
For its dimensions (132 metres long, 65 metres wide, and 30 metres high) it is considered the second largest basilica in Rome. From 1980 it is also ascribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
This basilica was founded in a.D. 395 by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, exactly over Saint Paul's grave. The grave and the chains of the Saint are still partially visible today in the crypt of the basilica.
Later on, the basilica was extensively modified both inside and outside: throughout the centuries it was continuously embellished and enhanced by the Popes. Unfortunately in a.D. 1823 a fire, caused it heavy damages. This resulted in a re-construction that saw the contributions of artistic works coming from all over the world. However, the actual basilica has maintained the original structure.
As You will see in these photos, the basilica is full of beautiful statues and ancient mosaics, which were made by famous Roman and Venetian artists.
Once You get there , please take a look also at the beautiful Cloister (ticket cost 4€). This was erected in the 13th century and some of its columns are decorated with golden and colourful mosaics. There are also architectural pieces from the destroyed basilica and ancient coffins.
Well that's all for today,
I hope You have enjoyed visiting togheter the beautiful Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Wall,
See you next post!
Bye-Bye
