Hello Dear Readers !
Today I will bring You with me to visit one of the most popular turistic sites in Rome, also very close to Circo Massimo, Lungo Tevere and Venezia Square.
I am talking about the famous "Bocca della Verità" (真実の口).
You can easily get there by B underground line ("Circo Massimo"stop, then 15 minutes walking) or by bus line n°44, 175, 715 and 716.
Actually Bocca Della Verità is located in the homonymous square, inside the portico of the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
It is said that this amazing mask-like marble sculture, used as a fountain or a manhole-cover during roman anchient times, represent a pagan divinity, maybe the river God "Tiber" or the sea God "Oceanus".
But it's curious name, "Bocca della Verità" (真実の口) which means the Mouth of the Truth, it is linked to a scary legend: during the Middle Age it was believed that if a liar entered his hand in the Mouth of the sculture, his hand would be chopped off by the Mouth as a punishment of the God.
This Legend is very impressive: that is why many turist are attracted by the sculture and dare to insert they hand into the Mouth. Of course nothing happen when you do so, but I must confess that when I inserted my own hand I got a shiver.....and then a funny souvenir photo!
You may have seen this famous sculture also in a romantic scene of the film "Roman Holiday" performed by actors Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
If you plan to keep a good memory of Rome and visit this place, please remember that you can see 真実の口 for free, but please do not be late: the portico and the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin as well, both close at 17:50.
I hope you enjoyed our web-visit to 真実の口, and I hope you will visit it for real in the future.
See you next post,
Alessandra
