In the very rooms where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) stayed during his journey to Italy (1786-1788) with the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and other German artists, the Casa di Goethe, Germany's only museum on foreign soil has been opened in 1997.The permanent exhibition has been conceived in three languages (German, Italian and English) and explains Goethe's journey and his sojourn in Rome.
The collection comprises graphic works, drawings, paintings, autographs, sculputres, installations, books.
The objects are used for the permanent exhibition "Goethe in Italy" and for the temporary exhibits curated by the museum.
The temporary exhibitions are often dedicated to German-Italian subjects and the tradition of the journey to Italy. The Casa has got its own collection.
With its cultural events in German and Italian such as talks, readings and colloquiums, the Casa di Goethe is considered a place of artistic, scientific and cultural encounter where visitors like to come back.

The visitor learns about the everyday life in the artist apartment on Via del Corso.
Extracts from Goethe's letters and diaries on display as well as Tischbein's drawings and sketches of a happy and relaxed poet make it clear that Goethe's living situation in Rome was completely different from the one he left behind as a Minister of State in Weimar.
The exhibition of the Casa di Goethe throws a light on Goethe's personal enthusiasm for the fine arts.
The last room is dedicated to the works written or completed in Rome or inspired by the city. Among them, Iphigenia , The Roman Elegies , Tasso, Egmont , Faust , The Roman Carnival and, of course, the Italian Journey .
The Casa di Goethe's reference library houses the collection by editor Richard Dorn and is continuously updated.
The library catalogue contains precious first editions of Goethe's books as well as secondary literature on his life and work, on the tradition of the Italian journey, the history of ideas in Italy and Germany and the cultural relationship between both countries.
You can do research in the library using the library's computer database or consulting our online catalogue from any computer with internet access.
The books can be consulted on appointment (Tuesdays - Fridays, 10.00-18.00).

Andy Warhol's Goethe portrait (1982) is certainly the exhibit's main eye-catcher.
