As the Emperor Hadrian was fond of architecture and art, he ordered and personally supervised the project (118-138 AD) following his admiration for foreign architectural styles and his passion for travel around his Empire.

The complex of the villa consists of a group of monumental buildings, roads, spas, libraries, theaters and temples rounded from ponds, fountains and gardens still fascinating and visitable today.

After the death of emperor Hadrian, which took place in 138 AD, the villa remained a part of the assets of the Imperial House.

In the following centuries suffered a slow decline and was stripped of its marble used in many buildings and medieval churches of the city of Tivoli.

Later on after the unification of Italy in 1870, the villa passed to the State government and today is a beautiful site to be enjoyed and visit!
