Dear all!

Today I'll write what in Italy we usually do before Christmas day.

Fist of all, is important to know that in Italy Christmas is the most important festivity.

Every 8th of December all italian families starts prepare Christmas tree and especially Nativity.

Christmas tree is common in lots of counties so I will not talk about this because there is nothing different.

What is different is Nativity.

From 8th of Dec. in every house you can find Nativity and the village very similar to the period when Jesus was born. You can also find pastors with sheeps, fishermen, bakers...and all ancient works.

This can be made by different material:
somethimes wooden little houses and little men, somethimes plastic and from very exdpert people papier-mache

Especially in Naples, is tipical to find during Christmas period papier - made Nativity not only in all hauses, but also in lots of streets.

Some people sells this little handmade men made by papier-mache or wooden.

Somethimes there are also some competition for the best Nativity done.

Lots of people like to add particular things to the Nativity (for example try to create a cave where was born Jesus, or add a false river so you can see water running along the streets, or false musk or sheeps made with cotton)

Usually people decore their Nativity with false snow (for example polystyrene) and add also multicolour small lights to give a beautiful effect in the night in the house.

The athmosphere you will breathe is very suggestive.

Finally, some cities creeate a real Nativity with real people who dress like past costumes, and re-creeate in some streets of the city scene so for people who walk in that street seems to live in that period.

They are common people who decide for thet period to act and made a "show" in order to show to other people how was living when Jesus was born.

I suggest you when you come in Italy in Christmas period in Naples, Rome and especially south Italy, to ask someone for the "PRESENTE VIVENTE ": It means the "REAL NATIVITY".

The most of the time visiting it is free!

Thank you

Linda
