Do you like gardens, fountains and waterworks?

If yes , you “must” visit “Villa D’Este” in Tivoli.

It’s situated along the Aniene river near the Great Waterfall on the western slopes of the Monti Tiburtini. The richness of the waters favored, over the centuries, the constructions of large architectural complexes. The most remarkable examples constituted by Villa Adriana dating from the Roman times, the XVI century Villa D’Este and Villa Gregoriana built in the XVI century in the chasm of the Aniene Valley just underneath the Roman acropolis.

Villa D’Este is included in the UNESCO world heritage list; it is a masterpiece of Italian architecture and especially garden design. With its impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, waterworks, and music, it constituted a model for European gardens in the baroque style.

Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este , after the disappointment of a failed bid for the papacy, brought back to life here the splendor of the courts of Ferrara, Rome and Fontainebleau. Governor of Tivoli from 1550, he immediately realized a garden in the hanging cliffs of the “Valle gaudente”, but it was only after 1560 that his architectural and iconographic program became clear.

Villa D’Este is composed of the Palace, whose rooms were decorated under the tutelage of the stars of the late Roman Mannerism, and the garden with 50 fountains, 64 waterfalls and 380 water jets.

My favorite attractions are:

“Il viale delle 100 fontane” ( 1 hundered fountains)

It is a walk composed of 100 fountains.
