Dear Bloggers,
I want to let you know that from the 23th of October to the 7th of March there is an interesting exhibition in Rome, at the "Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana", about the birth of Eur and its most famous building, the Palace itself.
The name of the exhibition is "A new Rome - Eur and the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana".
The idea of hosting a large Universal Exposition in Rome to celebrate Italian civilization and the success of the regime was planned for the 1942.
The main theme of the Exposition was to represent the evolution of the human progress by constructing buildings, places, fountains, roads and decorative programs in Rome.
It was in those years that it was instituted the Agency "Eur", the governing body of the Exposition. They defined a master plan followed by different Italian leading architects with the imposition of a classic but modern vision, characterized by a symmetrical structure.
There were also painters responsible for the decorative program, always with the criteria of universality and classical tradition trying to celebrate the imperial vocation that runs through the history of the ancient Rome.
The "Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana" looks like a square Coliseum, with some statues representing one particular craft or talent, and an inscription on the top of the building to celebrate the Italian genius such as heroism, music, crafts, political genius, social, labor, agriculture, philosophy, commerce, industry, archeology. astronomy, history, architecture, sculpture, poetry, painting etc.
The Second World War interrupted all these artists and it meant the renunciation of the Exposition and a halt to all buildings works.
In the 50’s the Government decided on a new future for the Eur, so that they finished some buildings, museums, archives and the high-speed artery of Via Cristoforo Colombo and the metro between Termini and the EUR opened to the public.
Only drawings and sketches remain of the decorations planned, studies of the scenographic effects of the lighting system, models, cartography.
And all these things are exposed in the exhibition where you can also find pictures, advertising campaign, movies and photograpy (Anita Ekberg on the set of "La Dolce Vita" and the Palace behind her).
The "Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana" is also the Headquarters of Fendi which has contributed to the creation of this exhibition to keep alive the memory of an important piece of the modern history of Rome.
It was not possible to take pictures inside the exhibition, so, if you’d like to enjoy the visit, hurry up, you have time to visit it until the 7th of March.
