Dear bloggers,
now that the hot weather has arrived, what could be better than spending some relaxing time by visiting the natural Beauty that Italy offers?
The “Castles Route” in Friuli is one the most interesting itineraries in the region and connects some of the most important centers in the area. Walking through this area you can meet many historic and artistic resources and the many agro-food excellences.
I suggest you to start the tour near the town of Cervignano. In the lower Friuli, a few kilometers from the fortress of Palmanova and the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia, there are two adjacent fortified bodies: the castles of Strassoldo di Sopra and Sotto, owned by the accounts of Strassoldo.
Their parks are the result of large works of art made in the 18th century when the marshy areas were reclaimed and water, expertly channeled, became the dominant artistic element of the gardens.
After our visit to these castles we can reach Cassacco, in the north of Udine. Among these beautiful places we find our first castle: the Castle of Cassacco. This castle was never besieged or destroyed and its harsh and medieval features have been preserved until today. The castle complex is private and can be visited by appointment.
After a few kilometers, we arrive at Treppo Grande. Here we find the beautiful Zegliacco Castle, located in the eponymous town, which nowadays presents some architectural elements as a reminiscence of country villas. The castle is private and can be visited only for a few days during the year.
Continuing on our way, we can reach Buja. The east hill houses the rests of what was once the medieval castle, built before 983, when Emperor Otto II gave it as a fief, with four others, to the Patriarch of Aquileia.
Proceeding our trip, we arrive at Osoppo, a city linked to the most famous of its hills, called "Il Forte", which dominates the area where the last prehistoric reliefs are eroded by the Tagliamento river and wind up in the plain. The remains of this fort consist of galleries, ditches, ruins of defenses of various ages including the fortifications of the last two world wars. The scenery is beautiful especially on the side of the river Tagliamento.
Leaving Osoppo we reach San Daniele del Friuli. This famous town has a wealth of artistic and historical resources that deserve to be seen. However, this time the reason for our stop is dictated by a famous local specialty: the famous ham.
The next stage is Rive d'Arcano, where we can admire a beautiful castle, one of the best kept in Friuli, with parts of great historic interest and suggestion, lying in the middle of the countryside and in which time seems to have stopped.
From Rive d'Arcano we take the road to Fagagna, beginning a very suggestive road that winds through the country, with small towns, hills, storks and gardens. Here we have to taste the typical local cheese, the Fagagna cheese.
Nearby Fagagna there is Villalta, in which we find another beautiful castle, very well preserved, that, from a small hill, dominates the territory around it.
Leaving Fagagna, we reach Castelcosa. Its castel is a splendid palace with a large garden and park that transforms itself into an ideal location for ceremonies, weddings, receptions and private parties, exhibitions, congresses and workshops, events, appetizers and tastings
The Castle can host events both in the ancient painted and frescoed rooms as well as in the vast garden surrounded by the historic cloistered walls.
Finally we reach Cordovado. The medieval castle of Cordovado was born on the vestibule of a Roman castrum that was guarded by a ford of Augusta Street.
This enchanting place is among the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy". Even today its walls, which have been preserved almost completely intact, appear in all their majesty and enclose inside buildings dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
The peculiarity of its park is to appear vast in the eyes of the visitor who, along the many paths, is always faced with new perspectives even when he has not gone that little road.
For now our adventure that has made us discovering a portion of Friuli which is not one of the most well-known, ends here, but I inform you that in Friuli there are many other castles and villages to visit which you will be fascinated by and can reserve you many pleasant surprises.
Thank you for reading!
