Located in the province of Rome, on the shores of Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo is a town of about 8000 inhabitants belonging to the Castelli Romani area, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and a favorite destination for lovers of nature.
The name derives from that of a Roman family, the Gandolfi, who in the twelfth century erected the castle of the same name.

Papal Palace: the Pope famously moved to this building in the summer attracting numerous pilgrims and tourists during his Sunday blessing. This traditional presence in the past centuries, however, was not constant, however, and had a long break between 1870 and 1929.

Around the Papal Palace cover about 55 hectares Papal Gardens. Built by Maffeo Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII, the villa has become part of the complex of the Pontifical Villas in 1929.
The present building consists of two parts: one overlooking the lake and rises on three floors, and the other overlooking the sea, is divided into four levels.
Within the environment of the villa you will find the castle residence of the College of Propaganda Fide and the Magnolia Garden, a formal garden which can be reached through an avenue of oaks.

The gardens of the Villa Barberini and Roman ruins. Since 1929 with the Lateran Treaty extended the Villa Barberini was annexed to the Vatican to Castel Gandolfo appliances. Inside are located several remains of the villa of the Roman Emperor Domitian (the "Albanum Domitiani"). And among these deserve a mention: a great cryptoporticus (originally 300 meters), the remains of a theater (some stucco still visible) and several exedras. Few of the early sections of road still covered by the original Roman paving are visible in some areas of central papal gardens. The latest archaeological excavations were carried out shortly after the acquisition by the Holy See. The grounds are very well kept and sometimes called "the belvedere" are still places on the terraces of Roman construction. Several finds of Domitian are kept in a small Antiquarium. To visit the gardens need a special permission of the Vatican offices. Considering the park adjacent to the Papal Palace (the Garden of the Moor) the total extraterritorial area is over 50 acres.

HOW TO GET TO CASTEL GANDOLFO

By car:
Take the SS 7 Appia new exit no. 23 of the GRA, then follow the signs to Castel Gandolfo.

By train:
From Termini Station take line for Albano Laziale and get off at Castel Gandolfo.

By bus:
From Rome take the Metro bus stop to Anagnina, from there take the bus line CO.TRA.L Rome - Castel Gandolfo.
