Dear Bloggers,
today I’d like to introduce you another very famous street in Rome : Via Nazionale.
You can easily reach that street taking the A line metro and getting of
at Repubblica station.
The metro stops directly at Piazza della Repubblica, this square is located at few hundred meters from Termini station.
At the center of the square is the beautiful fountain of "Naiad" built at the beginning of the '900
and just behind the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and Martyrs, built by Michelangelo and set in a wing of the Roman imperial baths.
This is the main entrance of Via Nazionale that arrives up to Piazza Venezia.
Since the initial design, via Nazionale was thought to be a wide road, necessary to create a fast and straight way between the main station and Piazza Venezia.
This is a photo of Via Nazionale in 1885 and close to it a photo taken today!
Along the new road were built in the last three decades big hotels at the beginning, the Church of St. Paul's Within the Walls (1880, first non-Catholic Christian church built in Rome after the unification of Italy)
and also residential properties for the new bourgeoisie of the capital, as well as public buildings for the Exhibition Hall (1883).
The road has fortunately retained much of its charm, of course, has been enriched by many shops, so it has become a popular shopping street for both romans and tourists.
Just a few sample of the many shops you can find there
I really reccomand everybody to take a walk, especially on Saturday and Sunday where the traffic is reduced!
Thank you all and see you soon! Luca
