Epiphany is an old tradition which started in Jesus period when 3 KING (RE MAGI), called Baldassarre, Melchiorre and Gasparre brought gold, incense and myrrh to Jesus just born.

In order to follow that tradition, today in every italian house parents give to their children some gifts.

But children usually dont't know it...they think present are given by La Befana.

Legend says that Befana is an old woman who travel around the world with an old wooden broom and she fly with her broom to bring present to all children.

While Santa Claus brings to Children toys, books and other presents they would like, La Befana brings to children sweets or carbon.

Every family in the night of 5th of January, put some big socks in the house next to the fireplece, so in the middle of the night, when everyone is sleeping, La Befana can put some present inside socks.

If children went good during the past year, La Befana fills the socks with candies, choccolates, marshmallows and other sweets., but...if children went very bad, she put inside socks just carbon so the child understand that next year must be more polite and good with everyone.

When the morning of 6th of January the children wake up they find sweets or carbon.

Somethimes parents prefer to buy in a shop socks which are already full of sweets instead of fill socks they have in the house.

At the same time, during Epiphany day, in lots of Italian most famous square, lots of women dressed by Befana, walk and throw candy to children.

In particular in Rome, in Piazza Navona, there are from the end of November until the 6th of January, Christmas markets where you can find lots of Chirstmas souvenir, sweets, Befana socks full of candy, italian traditional food and a small luna park for children.

A typical food is a big donut with sugar and you can choose if put some NUTELLA on the top, in order to make it very delicious!!! smile

It's relly nice especially on the 6th of January have a walk along the square and enjoy Christmas and Epiphany atmosphere.

After 6th of January all Christmas events are finished and people usually take away every Christmas decoration.

As a famous Italian proverb say "Quando arriva l'Epifania tutte le feste porta via"

It means "When Epiphany arrive, take away every festivity"

So if you will decide to spend next Christmas in Italy please don't forget to stay until 6th of January.
