waveeye Dear Bloggers,

do you like sea, nature and view?

If your answer is positive, you “must” visit Sardinia. Today I want to talk you about “Alghero”.

Alghero is an italian town. It is situated in the province of Sassari in northwestern Sardinia, next to the Mediterranean Sea.

An ancient Catalan burg on the sea, an infinite variety of colours and landscapes, sun and year-round mild temperatures, stories and legends of ancient civilizations, the sound of the ancient Catalan tongue, the allure of sailing, the adventure of extreme sports and much more. And then there's the sea: the very soul of the city.

Alghero extends its welcome from the north-western corner of the ancient land of Sardinia. The name Alghero comes from the latin Aleguerium, meaning stagnation of algae on the coast.

When you walk through Alghero, on its centuries old walls, among its distinctive narrow cobble-stone alleyways, you notice the particular allure that only a seaside city can have. A sea that is always there in the landscape and always at hand, a tourist port where next to large yachts can be seen the colours of the typical fishing boats for local fish; and among the shapes and colours of history, there is an of the infinite variety of places where you can relax and have a restorative break.

Main attractions:

- Alghero Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Immacolata di Alghero). Begun in 1570, it was opened in 1593 but finished and consecrated only in 1730. The church original was in Gothic style.

- Porto Conte

- Capo Caccia

- …

The area northwest of Alghero Bay with Porto Conte and the relatives Punta Giglio and Capo Caccia limestone promontory offer several fields of study and activities, from geology to biology studies and researches, to sport and adventures like caving scuba diving and cave-diving, trekking and climbing. There are more than 300 discovered caves upon and under water and semi submerged. Today, tourism has not completely overtaken Alghero and the town still retains its distinctive Catalan identity with the local fishing industry an important contributor to the local economy.
