TAKE A WALK IN THE CAFFARELLA PARK
Dear bloggers, spring has finally arrived and if you feel like have a nice walk or relax at the park I suggest you to visit “The Caffarella Park” in Rome where history of Rome and nature find the perfect match.
This park is part of the bigger one known as “Appia Antica Park” (maybe I’ll take photos and show it next time) a very big valley situated between the Aurelian Walls, the Via Latina, and Via Appia Antica. You may reach it walking a 5 minutes distance from Metro A – Pontelungo, Furio Camillo or Colli Albani, each metro station has its access to the park nearby.
The park, has different accesses where information panel shows the public areas visited, the main routes, the monuments and the rules of conduct. The name of the valley comes from the main historic estate in this area, belonging to the family of Caffarelli on the XVI century. The park is rich of history spots and during your walk you can meet different ruins and monument of interest of the ancient Rome. Since the park is very big you can even rent a bike, for me I just choose a walk at this time, but I’ll try the bike tour for sure.
During my walk I have meet several ruins on the way, and two different attractions :
The “Tomb of Annia Regilla” and the “Tower Valca”.
The “Tomb of Annia Regilla” is tought to be that of Annia Regilla, wife of Herode Atticus, the wealthy politician born in Greece around 100 AD. Upon his wife’s death Herode Atticus dedicated to her memory a large agricultural estate.
Here a photo of the building entrance, and additional explanations in english.
The “Tower Valca” is situated in a convenient location close to the river Almone, (yes there’s a river in the park) and dated to XII century, the tower is built in blocks of regular tuff, lava stone and marble. This was a water mill used for processing and washing of clothes.
Here a photo of the old mill!
and additional information in english.
Well, that's all for the moment, but before finishing I'd like to show you a funny picture ...a nice meeting I had during my walk ...
Hope you had fun reading...Bye bye Luca
